Everyone does it. It’s totally normal. Sometimes it’s satisfying. Pooping is a totally natural way for your body to flush out waste. Also, knowing what your poop looks like can be beneficial to you. Making sure you pay attention to the size, color, texture and yes, even the smell, can tell you a lot about how healthy and happy your body is.
Your body is reactive, especially to the foods you eat. The food you eat can affect the color, smell and shape of your poop. For example, black colored poop can be the result of eating foods high in fiber, black licorice, or blueberries. Even antibiotics can affect the color.
There are many factors that contribute to irregular or abnormal poop. It is up to you to figure out what your body may be trying to tell you. Stress, dehydration, lack of fiber and medical conditions can all cause abnormal bowels.
Timing. The digestive system is a huge player in the body’s overall health and wellness. How often you use the bathroom is important to pay attention to. There isn’t a minimum or maximum amount that any one should poop, however, staying regular is important. On average, men and women poop 14 to 17 ounces daily.
Color. This is usually the first thing you can easily observe after using the bathroom. Here's a general breakdown of what waste color might be trying to tell you—and remember, each body is different! If you're concerned with the color of your poop, it may be time to consult with your doctor.
Shape. How your poop is shaped is determined by how it forms while in your intestine. Typically, “normal” poop is log-shaped. However, if your poop comes out in pellet or marble shapes that is indicative of constipation. On the other hand, if your poop comes out watery, that is a clear sign of diarrhea.
Take notice of your poop. Making sure you have a healthy digestive system is important to your livelihood and overall health. Remember better health equals better bowels.
