The Health Problems American Adults Are Up Against Career, family, social life—you’ve got a lot to take care of… but when can you start taking care of you? There’s no better time than now, especially considering that less than 3 percent of American adults meet the basic qualifications for having a “healthy lifestyle.” In today’s world, sickness, injury and disease run rampant, putting our bodies and quality of life at risk. Here are some of the biggest threats facing today’s average American adult.

Heart Disease

According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women—it has been for close to 90 years. In fact, someone in the US experiences a heart attack every 40 seconds, and each minute, more than one person dies from a heart-disease related event.

Headaches and Migraines

It’s been estimated that 50 percent of adults have suffered from a headache during the last year… no, not just in America—globally. In fact, migraine headaches, specifically, are the third most prevalent illness in the world, and one out of four US households includes someone who suffers from migraines. Symptoms can include dull or sharp pain, aching pressure, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light and more, which can greatly impact quality of life for chronic headache or migraine sufferers.

Work-Related Pain and Injury

In 2015, out of all injuries in the workforce, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) like sprains, strains and tears accounted for a third of all injured workers, attributing to an average recuperation rate of 8 days off work. Poor posture, improper bending and lifting and daily repetitive habits can also contribute to lasting pain (think neck aches, back problems and more), which left untreated, can compromise the entire musculoskeletal system, including spinal function.

Stress

According to a recent Gallup poll, 79 percent of American adults considered themselves stressed at the end of 2017. Maybe it’s our economy, politics, careers, personal lives… whatever the reason, the long-term consequences are very real. Unmanaged, stress can turn into a variety of health issues like anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, decreased immune system function, high blood pressure and other physical health issues.
