Dr. Adam Hayes, D.C., Chiropractic Director of Chiro One Wellness Center of Mokena, answered some questions about the benefits of chiropractic care for children in Kids and Chiropractic, Part I. In the second part of this series, he addresses some of the misconceptions surrounding adjustments for kids and goes in-depth about his experiences.
BW: Are adjustments dangerous for kids? How old do they have to be?
Dr. Adam: Not at all. I will use my own children as an example: I have three boys, ages 7, 5, and 3. (I keep busy on the weekends!) Each of my boys was adjusted on the day they were born. So far in my practice, my youngest patient is 10 minutes old. An important point to keep in mind: While they may look similar in certain cases, a pediatric adjustment is very different from an adult adjustment; the force applied is gentle and easy. In addition to adjustments with my hands, I also use small, calibrated instruments when needed. The kids love hearing their "popcorn" (the pop heard is called a cavitation and is the release of gas from the joints) as they get adjusted.
BW: Have you seen improvements in any symptoms?
Dr. Adam: I have seen improvement in many different symptoms in my office over the years, including the alleviation of symptoms from ADD/ADHD, colic, torticollis (wry neck or loxia) and other behavioral issues, bed wetting, digestive problems, allergies or asthma and even seizures. When these symptoms disappear or reduce, the difference in the quality of life for the child is amazing to witness. This is one of the reasons I love taking care of so many kids.
BW: What kind of therapies do children do?
This is really age and situation dependent. Based on an evaluation and a few tests, we will come up with the best recommendation to achieve a balanced nervous system for the particular child. Sometimes they need traction or other times they may need a neurological "cross/crawl" exercise. There are times they need no therapies at all, only an adjustment. It all depends on the child. Listen to the advice of your chiropractor, ask questions and follow through with your visits. Then, see the results!
BW: Do you recommend families get treatment together? Why?
Dr. Adam: I always encourage families to come in together for one simple reason: You know your children much better than I ever will. If Mom and Dad are present and under care, they are not only leading by example, but they help the doctor give the best care to your child because they know what is "normal" for their kids or not. Parents are an integral component of their children's health and should be working closely with the chiropractor for best results.
