Kids and Chiropractic
Many people are unaware kids are excellent candidates for chiropractic care, and some may even be wary of adjustments for children. In a two-part series, Dr. Adam Hayes, D.C., Chiropractic Director of Chiro One Wellness Center of Mokena, dispels some myths and shares valuable information of the benefits of chiropractic for children.

BW: Why should children receive chiropractic care?

Dr. Adam: The nervous system, which consists of your brain, spinal cord and nerves, controls everything in the body, including growth and development. Infants, children and adults can all experience subluxations or misalignments in the spine. Infants and children can become subluxated from birth trauma, other minor or major traumas and developmental stress. These subluxations cause stress to the nervous system which can lead to a decrease in function of the affected area. During the first five years of life, the body produces more neural pathways than at any other time. It is vital this production is optimized as the first few years are crucial to each child’s potential.

BW: Should healthy children receive chiropractic care?

Dr. Adam: Absolutely. Think back to when you were a kid. How many bumps and bruises, falls and spills did you take as a child? If you ask my mother, it was probably in the thousands! Each fall or bump has the possibility of misaligning or subluxating the spine, thereby affecting the nerves and the function of the body. These misalignments should be corrected as soon as possible. Optimizing the nervous system, whether you deem the child "sick" or "healthy," will lead to many positive results. Increased energy, decreased symptoms of ADD/ADHD and a heightened immune system are some of the positive, potential results from chiropractic all children should enjoy.

BW: Have you treated kids in your office?

Dr. Adam: I see many children in my office. Often they race their brothers and sisters to the table to see who gets to be adjusted first that day! The kids like to play games during their adjustment like "where is the popcorn today," or get adjusted while pretending to be dinosaurs or getting their special "princess only" adjustments. We make it fun so the kids will enjoy their treatments and do them easily and willingly. This makes a big difference for the parents because they don’t have to "drag" their kids in for a visit.

Thank you, Dr. Adam!

In Part II of Kids and Chiropractic, Dr. Adam answers a few more important questions regarding the misconception chiropractic is dangerous for children, various symptoms he has seen improve, the types of therapies children do and finally, why he recommends families receive treatment together.
