Change is an inevitable part of life; sometimes it’s exciting and sometimes it’s scary. Change can be worrisome when it’s out of your control—like a death in the family, an unexpected job loss or a health problem. And sometimes even when you choose change, like making a career switch, moving into a new home or embarking on a lifestyle change, it can still be quite an adjustment. But mindfully opting to embrace life’s twists and turns gives you the opportunity to add richness and vibrancy to your life. Take on changes with an open mind and willing spirit and welcome into your life:
Personal Growth. Facing adversity or encountering new situations pushes you to rise to the challenge, spurring personal growth in many different ways, whether emotionally, mentally or spiritually. Change gives you the chance to learn a little or a lot about a topic, relationship or situation you may have never known much about before.
Perspective. It’s so easy to become engrossed in drama or negativity when you don’t step back and put things into perspective. Upset about losing your job? Before you react to the change, think it through. Maybe this change is the opportunity to start something new or a business of your own. Proper perspective allows you to realize the benefits change brings.
Usable Wisdom. Fighting change not only makes life more difficult, but it postpones the opportunity to gain wisdom from the experience at hand. When you are calm and thoughtful during a time of change, it is much easier to take in knowledge and learn from the experience, as well as use it to help others and yourself sooner.
New Personal Connections. Even the smallest of life’s changes can bring new people into your life. Chance meetings with different individuals may be brief, lasting or somewhere in between, but making personal connections with others is one of the most rewarding aspects of time here on earth.
A Sense of Peace. By accepting change as it comes, a feeling of peacefulness is a major emotional benefit. Even if you’re accepting what seems like a very negative change, once you decide to no longer struggle with it, you will have more mental energy to focus on the positive things in life.
Enhance your life by embracing the changes that cross your path. But don’t expect yourself to be able to do this overnight! If you know a big life transition is coming, give yourself time to examine the issue or event in your mind and talk it over with those you trust before you take the plunge. And when change is unexpected, be as kind to yourself as you would be to a friend as you experience the emotions that take place during your new circumstances.
