In this rush around, immediate gratification, ‘make me better’ society, it’s easy to just get your chiropractic adjustment and then hit the door. But you may be missing out on what makes those adjustments –and your overall treatment—more successful.

We talked to Dr. Adam Hayes, D.C., Chiropractic Director of Chiro One Wellness Center of Mokena about the therapies he uses and recommends to his patients to get more value from their adjustments.

Therapies for Optimal Healing

“You can have a few things going on with any subluxation complex,” points out Dr. Adam. “It could be tight muscles, ligaments that need to be stretched or some that could be too lax, leading to instability.” While an adjustment does a great job of addressing the core of these issues by realigning the subluxation directly, Dr. Adam stresses that additional therapies help to stabilize the body, allowing for optimal healing.

What can you do at home?

Getting Traction

Traction is a therapy designed to correct forward head posture and a reduced or reversed cervical curve. Dr. Adam notes that issues with the cervical spine are very common and put a lot of stress on the nervous system.  “Whether you do that under your doctor’s supervision in the office or with a ‘do-it-yourself’ Denner Role unit from Chiro One, correcting that cervical curve should be a major goal for any patient,” he says.

What’s Another 10-15 Minutes?

If you can correct your cervical spine at home, why do it in the office? According to Dr. Adam, therapies are done under supervision in the office for a reason. “Some of these therapies can seem deceptively simple with a wide range of results for patients,” he notes. That means these therapies can also be done incorrectly at home with negative results or potential injury.

So, What Can You Do At Home?

Besides the core therapies done in the office, Dr. Adam recommends any type of therapy that helps to strengthen your core. “The average American has a far below average core. A weak core contributes to abnormal posture and spinal joint dysfunction.” Dr. Adam also promotes stretching, something he believes we need to do throughout the day each day.
