Freedom Isn’t Free By Brett Penager
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
I am proud to be an American. I have traveled the world and in my opinion there is no greater country on the planet. There is a reason that many people across the globe want to immigrate to the United States of America and partake in the “American Dream.”
There are few places in the world that offer the opportunity to be and do whatever your heart desires unencumbered like here. I believe that if you’re a US citizen, until you go outside of the borders of this country, you have no idea how good you have it here. I am not perfect and neither is my country. We have injustices, challenges, wrongs, poverty and a whole lotta work to do in a multitude of areas to improve the human condition here and abroad. The bottom line is that there is far more right here than there is wrong.
There is more opportunity, wealth, jobs, education, and unadulterated possibilities in the United States than in any other country in the world. This I am certain of, if it is possible…and it surely is; it will happen here. Above are the first two sentences of the Declaration of Independence that makes this all possible.
Fifty-six men staked their lives, families and livelihood on signing this document and since then 1,311,739 soldiers have died protecting it. Freedom, opportunity and the unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not free. Its currency is blood. The blood of the soldiers that were willing to lay their lives down so that we could express the self-evident truth that all men are created equally.
Today, Monday May 28, 2012 is Memorial Day. It is a day that our country takes off in celebration of the men and women of the US armed forces. I, for one, do not take lightly the price that has been and continues to be paid so that we can live the American dream. To the soldiers of the United States of America, please accept my heartfelt love and gratitude for protecting this great nation. You are, without a doubt, my hero. Thank you for serving us all. For those US citizens not in the military, what price are you willing to pay for freedom? Whatever yours is, know this…you probably don’t have to give your life for it and it is not free. There is only one person alive who is willing to do this. Our US soldiers. Thank them.
